NEWS RELEASE (#2022-05)

Change of Race Venue – 16th IDBF World Dragon Boat Racing Championships

The race venue for the 16th IDBF World Dragon Boat Championships (WDBRC2023) will now revert to the original location, the Royal Thai Navy Rowing and Canoeing Training Centre in Rayong, Pattaya.

The IDBF has received updated information from the Organising Committee, the Rowing & Canoeing Association of Thailand (RCAT), that with the recent rainfall in Pattaya, the water levels at the Training Centre have increased and now meets the water depth requirements as per IDBF’s Competition Regulations – CR6.10.

As the original preferred site for WDBRC2023, the purpose-built facilities will have better and more accessible areas for athletes and supporters. With the possibility of inclement weather during the Championships, the safety and wellbeing of athletes and supporters also played a part in the decision-making process.

The IDBF and RCAT understands that the change in venue will impact team logistics. RCAT will be working with hotels to ensure breakfast will be served earlier to accommodate for any extra travel time required to get to the race venue. There will be no additional transportation costs from the hotels as well.

The IDBF is absolutely confident that the advantages of changing venue outweigh any disadvantages. Rest assured, the decision was not taken lightly but was taken in the best interests of the sport.

Times and locations for following scheduled meetings and events remains the same.

Further details regarding the race venue will be covered in the Technical Bulletin 4 and will be published over the next few days.

The IDBF would like to thank RCAT for their commitment and dedication in delivering a world-class Championship and all teams for their patience and understanding.

President IDBF
Mike Thomas

IDBF World Dragon Boat Racing Championships 2023 Bulletin 3

BULLETIN NO.3 – Update – 6 July

Thank you for your patience whilst RCAT (Organising Committee) evaluated the weather conditions and reviewed logistical options and operations for the Championships.

Key update: the racing venue will now be at Mabprachan Reservoir.

More information including other key updates for Team Managers can be found in IDBF WDBRC 2023 Bulletin 3 – updated 6 July 2023.

The information in Bulletin No.3 is complementary to Bulletin No.1. The two Bulletins together serve as complete guidance.

This information of Bulletin No.3 provides updated information about the 16th IDBF World Dragon Boat Championships including IDBF registration fee, hotels, accommodations fee, ceremonies, etcetera that must be adhered to.

The IDBF and the Organising Committee for these Championships wish to thank all the participating countries for your patience with the delay in the distribution of Bulletin 3. IDBF has attempted to include as much information as possible in Bulletin 3, please take the time to read through the information in detail.

The Organising Committee has been on ‘weather watch’ for the last month and will make a final decision at the end of June as to whether the Venue for the Championships will need to be moved from the Royal ‘Thai Navy Rowing and Canoeing Training Centre’ to ‘Mabprachan Reservoir’ (the same venue used for the 2019 World Dragon Boat Racing Championships). The decision will be made due to the dropping water level at the Training Centre.

If the Championships Venue changes, this will also mean the location for the Opening Ceremony, Team Registration, Team Managers Meeting and Grade 1 IRO training will also change. IDBF will notify all participating countries as soon as possible after the 30th of June with any changes which will need to take place.

Moving Venues at the last minute is not an easy task and IDBF appreciates the massive effort the Organising Committee (Rowing and Canoe Association of Thailand) are committing to hosting another successful Championships.

NEWS RELEASE (#2022-02) | 16 September 2022

The 16th World Dragon Boat Racing Championships (WDBRC) will now be held in Pattaya, Thailand.

A majority decision was made to move the location from Hong Kong to Thailand with the main concern from member countries being the quarantine restrictions surrounding the event and impact on the athletes.

Votes were cast country members on this difficult decision at the IDBF Extra Ordinary Congress (held online), which recently concluded.

The IDBF would like to wholeheartedly thank the HKCDBA and the Hong Kong Organising Committee for their hard work, dedication, and commitment in the preparation of the Championships. We look forward to returning to Hong Kong in the future.

WDBRC 2023 will be held on 7-13 August 2023.
